What is Personality?
Personality is the unique, but innate composition of our consciousness. Personality is the foundation that sets up how our consciousness acts and thinks. For me, I'm the type of person to rarely ever talk. I speak to virtually no one in the majority of situations, unless it is necessary. It keeps my intrapersonal skills sharp, as well as my intellect. However, underneath the built up layers that I surround myself in, I am a caring person who needs others to love and comfort. Personality is a lot more complex than this, but for the sake of things, this is my short and compact explanation.

Prompt: Discuss Hardships Faced by Immigrants After They Arrived in the United States
Making the journey to the United States was only half of the battle for historic immigrants. Millions of immigrants arrived between the years of 1820 and 1920. These immigrants were disproportionately European, and came because of a variety of push and pull factors. These factors each had their impact in the hardships that these immigrants would come to face. Early on (closer to 1820) came the influx of western European immigrants. The Irish came in large waves, due to extreme poverty and famine in their homeland. These issues persisted when they emigrated, and many would be limited to cities surrounding immigration ports, and would still live in poverty. They struggled to work and were often found doing jobs that others wouldn't, out of desperation and need for money. The Irish were also one of the groups of immigrants hit the hardest with the frequent bouts of xenophobia. This further alienated them and made it harder to set up a life and earn money. These were unfortunately common issues among the immigration booms of this period. The Chinese immigrants, who came in numbers that related to the Irish, faced almost exactly the same struggles that the Irish did, only with much more intensity. An example would be their being hit hard by xenophobia, as the Irish were, but also having to deal with racism both at the local and even federal levels. Other masses of immigrants from eastern European countries, as well as those like Italy also were met with the reality of poverty and xenophobia. Eastern Europeans, Italians, and Chinese people faced even more hardship, because they were essentially forced to learn a completely new language. They had to work. These immigrants persevered and lived as citizens among all of the unfair hardships that they faced, and established their roots and culture along with it. Along with the Chinese, Italians made their impoverished city areas into centers that would become culturally rich, and preserve what little the immigrants had of home. The Irish and Chinese were critical in performing the crucial, but wildly dangerous transcontinental railroad. These struggles, though horrible and unjust, were a big part of our history, and continue to be. Struggle upon struggle, and hardship after hardship were thrust upon these immigrants for upwards of a century. Immigration has, and always will be part of our country, so we must continually discuss and understand these issues. |
